DIY Plant Stand Step by step

  • STEP: 1

Measure and cut 4 legs for our stand. Ours was 18" tall.

  • STEP: 2

Next cut 4 crossbars for your 2 shelves. Our shelf is 10" so we cut (4) 10" pieces.

  • STEP: 3

Set up your miter saw to cut half the depth of the wood piece and just cut out a grove by cutting and then moving the board a little at a time. Tip: It helps to put stoppers at the front and back of the board so you know when to start and stop for all 4 boards.

  • STEP: 4

Once you have your half-laps cut, we need to put a pocket hole on each end on the bottom of each board.

  • STEP: 5

Grab some glue and apply a decent amount all over each half-lap.

  • STEP: 6

Once you have a nice amount of glue on both sides, put the pieces together and let them dry.

  • STEP: 7

We wanted a rounded outside edge on our legs so that's what we added.

  • STEP: 8

Layout all your legs together next to one another with the flat side up and make sure they are all flush on top and bottom edge. Draw 2 lines marking where your shelf top is going to be and put an X so you know where the bottom and top of your legs is when you mount the shelf pieces.

  • STEP: 9

Apply glue to the ends of your shelf legs.

  • STEP: 10

Once your pocket holes are drilled, add some glue to the ends and clamp down the shelf to the leg.

  • STEP: 11

Once you have your shelf clamped down to the legs, continue to screw in the shelves. Tip: Its best to do the same shelf section on top and bottom then move to the next side.

  • STEP: 12

Rotate the stand and repeat the process with the other 3 legs. Clamp, screw, and rotate.

  • STEP: 13

Once the legs are all attached its time to start to sand it. Using a 150 grit sponge, sanding the legs, cross brackets, and shelves making sure to knock down the edges if you can.

  • STEP: 17

For the tops, corners and 90 degree areas, use your Microzip and 120 grit to sand as you did with the sponge, making sure to knock down the edges.

  • STEP: 18

After you've finished sanding, take a tack cloth and clean up all the wood dust and leftovers from sanding to make sure it's nice and clean for spray paint.

  • STEP: 19

Once cleaned off with tack cloth, take somewhere and set your stand up to spraypaint (we should have just left this standing and realized that after that fact). Make sure its not somewhere that items can blow and stick to it while you are painting.

  • STEP: 20

Once you have your square cut out for your shelf piece we are going to find the center using a ruler running diagonal, corner to corner. Go ahead and draw a little line in the center area each way so that X marks the spot for the compass.

  • STEP: 21

Measure out your compass to half of the radius of the circle and secure it.

  • STEP: 22

Place the compass at the center of the X and draw a full circle to mark where you will cut our your shelf.

  • STEP: 23

Secure your board down and cut out your shelf. We secured ours by bolting it to the workbench corner so we could rotate it and cut.

  • STEP: 24

Again with 120 grit, grab the Finishing Block and sand the top, bottom and rim of the shelf, knocking down the edges but also cleaning up any uneven spots you made while cutting out.

  • STEP: 25

Once you finish sanding the shelf, take the same tack cloth and wipe it down, nice and clean for spray painting.

  • STEP: 26

Take the shelf and place it on a block to elevate it as you spray paint it, give it a nice coat and let dry. Once its dry flip it over and give it another spray. Depending on how well you coated it, it might need two layers of paint.

  • STEP: 27

Once your paint is dry, take an 80 grit sponge and 80 grit paper on your Microzip and distress the stand.

  • STEP: 28

Finish by adding distress all over your stand or just leaving it nice and solid, either way, Its a great and fun lil project.
